  • Please email Ms. Bethanie if you can volunteer on February 22nd for the 2nd “My Very Own School Library.”
  • Report Cards will go home today. Please email me if you would like to set up a meeting.
  • This Wednesday is the Black History Month Celebration. Please join us if you can. Room 115 will have versions of the Alice Walker poem There is a Flower at the Tip of My Nose Smelling Me displayed in the hallway.
  • On Valentine’s Day we will have time at 1pm to pass out cards. I encourage you to create homemade cards with your child and limit food/candy. Children will not have time to address or put together cards at school. This is a great opportunity to practice handwriting and reading.

This week we will read A Different Pond. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will be exploring texts with diverse characters this quarter.

Sight Words: long, very, little, words, after

Vocabulary Words: tackle, bait, lure, tackle, callous, trespass

We will continue How-To writing this week. Students will independently and with partners write step-by-step directions for things they know how to do. We will use our planning sheets to make How-To booklets. Ms. Jones will teach the students how to make a Valentine’s Day card bag. Students will practice adding details to their writing and using pictures to better explain directions.

MATH: This week we will start unit 6 in math. Students will make hour only clocks to works on practicing telling time on the analog clock. Students are encouraged to use the language “a little before, a little after and in between” to describe the time. Students will also receive new math journals this week (volume 2). Students will bring home volume 1 tomorrow.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: We will use flashlights to explore objects that are transparent, translucent and opaque. Students will use flashlights to make shadows and review how shadows are made.
