Dear Room 115 Families,

Our second recess fundraiser, the Ray School Walk-A-Thon, is this Friday, May 19th from 10:15 – 10:45.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 to allow us to have full staff for recess this school year. Without full recess staff, we would have even less (and less consistent) recess coverage.  Please come prepared to be outside and active (hat, sunscreen, water bottle, loose/cool clothing)

Reminders:

  • Send out your Flat Stanleys this week, if you haven’t already!
  • Walk-A-Thon, Friday 5/19
  • Field Trip  on Thursday, 5/25

THIS WEEK IN:

Students will be doing sorting activities throughout the week in their Daily 5 folders.

READER’S WORKSHOP
This week we will read Just Plain Fancy by Patricia Polacco. We will be coming back to this text each day as we read and learn something new from it during the week. We will discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words, identify the setting, characters and story parts in the text.

VOCABULARY OF THE WEEK: fancy, plain, shunned, miracle, gossiped

WRITER’S WORKSHOP
We are moving into persuasive writing this week.  Be prepared for your child to be more vocal, provide reasons, and try to persuade you in different ways;) We are also finishing up our poetry unit with poems about favorite animals.
MATH
We are in Unit 9. It is our last math unit.  This unit focuses on two-digit addition and subtraction and a review.

SCIENCE
We are recording our observations on our wheat and we are exploring what happens we we mow our grass and alfalfa. Will it grow back? We will collect various stems from the schoolyard and sort them.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We continue to learn about families around the world. This week we will learn about how a family in India lives.
