  • Happy New Year 2018! Welcome back. I hope you had a very restful and relaxing holiday. I am so excited to see all my first graders and their families too J!
  • Progress Reports were sent home on Friday before break. Please return the signed progress report to verify you have received it. As always, please email me if you have questions/concerns. I am happy to schedule a meeting as well.
  • This week I will send home a piece of writing with an attached rubric. Please review and help your child improve and finish if needed! Return the piece of writing and rubric in the green folder!
  • There is no school next Monday 1/15 in observance of MLK Jr.’s birthday.


This week we will read Whistle for Willie. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance. We will enjoy additional Ezra Jack Keats’ books this week including The Snowy Day and Peter’s Chair.

Sight Words: time, could, make, than, first

Students will be assessed on sight word knowledge this week. I will notify you with words missed if your child scores <90%.


We are well into How-To writing. Students brainstormed things they knew how to do. This week we will put our writing into booklets. We will focus on adding details, writing good conclusions and using transition words.


This week, we will finish up unit 4. We will practice adding 3 numbers and making a 10 to make adding easier. Students will practice writing their own number stories and finding 10 friends (10 more or 10 less) using the number grid. Students will take the unit assessment on Thursday. Please assist you child in completing the unit review and go over any topics that are challenging.


We will learn about MLK Jr. We will read a Scholastic News: Dr. King’s Wise Words. In science we will use a tuning fork to see sound vibrations in action. We will discuss loud and soft sounds and go on a Listening Walk outside.
