READER’S WORKSHOP/Daily 5

This week we will read Brave Irene by William Steig. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance. We will enjoy additional William Steig books this week including Dr. DeSoto and Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. We will review ABC order and antonyms.

Vocabulary: Advise, aristocrat, ceased, cherish, meddle, radiant, pounce

Sight Words: Been, who, now, people

WRITER’S WORKSHOP

Last week we concluded the unit on How-To writing. This week we will start All About writing. We will focus on brainstorming topics we know a lot about and use word webs to record facts about our topics.

MATH

This week, we will start unit 5 in math. We will begin learning more about place value using base ten blocks and by playing the digit game. We will also use pennies and dimes to represent numbers and discuss place value.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

We will learn about animals in winter. We will read Scholastic News Go Team Go! and Time for Kids Animals in Winter. In science we will use a tuning fork to see sound vibrations in action. We will discuss high and low pitches.
