READER’S WORKSHOP/Daily 5

This week we will read several books that focus on growth mindset in including Firebird, Brave Girl, She Persisted, Life in the Ocean, Lizard from the Park, Cinnemon. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance. We will discuss synonyms and homophones. We will work on the short o word family. WRITER’S WORKSHOP

We are continuing on with our unit on All About Writing. Students have now began to write their facts in booklets and are adding details, as well as important vocabulary that pertain to their topic. Students will add diagrams, table of contents and other non-fiction text features this week.

MATH

This week, we will continue with unit 5 in math. We will practice finding the length of a crooked path using non-standard measurement tools. We will have an exploration day on Tuesday. Students will practice making exchanges with base 10 blocks, comparing heights of objects in the classroom and finding the distance of several paths that lead to a treasure. Students will practice using the comparison symbols <, > and =. Students will play the digit game and create comparison number stories.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

In science we will use a kalimba to observe pitch. We will read Strings in Motion. We will read Time for Kids: Hot Spots and Scholastic News: Only in America.
