This week we will read Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will be assessed on their understanding of these concepts using a multiple choice and extended response question at the end of the week. This quarter our books of the week will focus on the growth mind set and perseverance.

Sight Words: some, these, would, other, into

Students are responsible for reading and spelling these words.

We will begin working on unit 2 in writing. This unit continues to focus on narrative writing with an emphasis on the writing process. We will plan our writing and this week we will add details to the beginning, middle and end. Students will use this process to write at least three stories before the unit’s end.

This week, we will continue to work on number stories. Students will use the number line and number grid to practice adding and subtracting and skip counting. We will play Roll and Total, Domino Top-It, Subtraction BINGO, Penny Plate and High Roller.

We will wrap up our unit on Patterns in the Sky. We will read How Many Stars in the Sky? We will begin our next unit on Sound and Light.

We will read our first edition of Scholastic News and learn about Veterans Day. We will start to discuss family traditions.
